Africa

Africa is the only inhabited continent without a synchrotron light source. Today, African researchers who need one must travel thousands of kilometres to Europe, Asia or North America — a barrier that limits who can do this science and how often. Changing that is the purpose of the African Light Source.

Every other region in this directory tells the same story: a home light source trains a generation of scientists, draws talented researchers back from abroad, and seeds high-technology industry around it. A facility on African soil would do the same — putting world-class structural biology, materials science, energy research and cultural-heritage studies within reach of African universities and industry.
