Congratulations to Fortune Mokoena and Alicia Potgieter, who have been awarded the SA–ESRF Internships — for an MSc and a PhD period respectively.
The two interns will study and work alongside the Engineering Groups at the ESRF–EBS in the Upgrade and R&D Development areas. This marks the start of a new era in which Science and Engineering combine, drawing in South African University engineering staff as part of the research and building the SA Synchrotron Community.

The ProgrammeTraining at the pinnacle of synchrotron technology
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is currently undergoing its Phase II upgrade — a period of intense high-technology development at one of the world’s premier large-scale scientific infrastructures. This upgrade created the opportunity for young South African scientists and engineers to embed within ESRF teams, gaining hands-on training while pursuing a postgraduate qualification.
Fully paid internship with postgraduate opportunity at the ESRF
An opportunity for two young South African scientists or engineers to work at the ESRF in an internship fashion and gain training leading to a degree during the upgrade period. The research project becomes the material towards the postgraduate qualification, under the joint supervision of the South African university involved and the ESRF.
