
The first African Lightsource Conference and Workshop brought together African scientists, students and friends of Africa from around the world to review the continent’s growing user base at international light sources and to advance the roadmap towards an African Light Source.

The programme was structured around five priorities that connected the work of African researchers at facilities worldwide with the strategic effort to establish a synchrotron on the continent.
- Review the status of the African user base at international light sources.
- Presentations of African work at light sources around the world.
- Presentations of highlights and the status of light sources globally.
- Discussions of strategy and policy for the roadmap towards an African Light Source.
- Election of the new, fully mandated Steering Committee for the African Light Source, and dissolution of the Interim Committee.
A turning point for governance
A central outcome of the meeting was the election of the new, fully mandated Steering Committee for the African Light Source and the dissolution of the Interim Committee — a step that placed the initiative on a more durable footing.
