Applications are invited for FAculty-STudent (FAST) teams to spend two months during the 2020 calendar year at participating advanced light sources, learning beamline techniques first-hand.
Application deadline
The deadline for the FAST Team Call for Applications is 15 December 2019.
The opportunityTwo months at an advanced light source
The International Council for Science (ICSU) has awarded the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) a grant to enhance advanced light source (AdLS) and crystallography sciences in five targeted regions of the world: Africa, the Caribbean, Mexico, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
Part of that funding will be allocated to send FAculty-STudent (FAST) teams for two months during the 2020 calendar year to LAAAMP’s AdLS Collaborative Partners, where they will participate in learning advanced light source beamline techniques, including those involving crystallography.

Targeted regionsFive regions, one mission
The grant is designed to strengthen advanced light source and crystallography sciences across five regions worldwide. Each FAST team brings together a faculty member and a student to build lasting capacity in their home institutions.
How a placement worksFrom classroom to beamline
A FAST team pairs a faculty member with a student. Together they travel to a partner light source, spend two months embedded with experienced staff, and return home equipped to apply and teach advanced beamline and crystallography techniques.
The programme is coordinated through LAAAMP, with full details of the January–December 2020 call published on the LAAAMP website. Prospective applicants from eligible regions are encouraged to apply before the 15 December deadline.
