African Lightsource Conference and Workshop: 16 -20 November 2015

The first African Lightsource Conference and Workshop brought together African scientists, students and friends of Africa from around the world to review the continent’s growing user base at international light sources and to advance the roadmap towards an African Light Source.

African scientists, colleagues and students who have worked at light sources, together with friends of Africa who support the vision for an African Light Source

ProgrammeFocus of the workshop

The programme was structured around five priorities that connected the work of African researchers at facilities worldwide with the strategic effort to establish a synchrotron on the continent.

  1. Review the status of the African user base at international light sources.
  2. Presentations of African work at light sources around the world.

The workshop moved from assessing Africa’s place in the global light-source community toward concrete governance: electing a fully mandated Steering Committee.

A turning point for governance

A central outcome of the meeting was the election of the new, fully mandated Steering Committee for the African Light Source and the dissolution of the Interim Committee — a step that placed the initiative on a more durable footing.

ProceedingsBook of abstracts

The contributions presented across the five days were collected in the final book of abstracts, documenting African research carried out at light sources worldwide alongside the strategic discussions on the African Light Source roadmap.
